Day 12 ยท Meet God
True: A Promise That Cannot Break
๐ AWAKEN
Someone let you down again. Maybe it was small โ a plan that fell through. Maybe it was the kind of broken promise that reorganizes how you trust people for years afterward. Either way, you know the specific ache of wanting just one voice in your life that never says something it doesn't mean. Now picture a pagan prophet, hired specifically to curse God's people, opening his mouth to do exactly that โ and a completely different sentence coming out instead.
๐ BEHOLD
Passage: Numbers 23:19
Read it twice. Who is speaking (a hired prophet named Balaam), and who hired him to say the opposite of this? What's the specific comparison the verse makes โ between God and what kind of person? Why would a claim like this, spoken by someone trying to curse Israel, carry unusual weight?
Balak, king of Moab, hired Balaam specifically to curse Israel out of fear of their growing numbers (Numbers 22). Balaam tries three times. Three times, a curse turns into a blessing in his mouth against his own intentions โ and this verse is the reason why, spoken almost as an aside: God isn't like the men who hired you to say otherwise.
๐ก INTERNALIZE
Truthfulness means God is entirely consistent with Himself โ no gap between His word and reality. "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" (Numbers 23:19). Humans lie for a hundred reasons โ fear, self-interest, forgetting, changing our minds. None of those apply to God. He's not managing a reputation or protecting Himself. What He says simply matches what's real, every time, without exception.
This is what makes every other attribute in this study trustworthy, not just true. You could hear that God is holy, powerful, just, good, sovereign โ and still wonder if He's telling the truth about any of it. Truthfulness is the attribute that guarantees the others aren't overselling themselves. When Jesus said "I am the truth" (John 14:6), He wasn't claiming to be accurate about facts โ He was claiming the same self-consistency the Father has: nothing about Him needs to be discounted or read with suspicion.
What this means for the specific promises you're holding onto. Titus 1:2 calls God "that cannot lie" the ground of "the hope of eternal life." Every promise in Scripture โ forgiveness, His presence, His return, His care for you specifically โ stands or falls on this one attribute. If God can lie, none of it is reliable. If He can't, all of it is as solid as the ground you're standing on, maybe more so, since the ground can shift and this can't.

Today's one small act: Find one specific promise of God's in Scripture โ pick any verse from this study so far โ and say out loud, "This is true, not just true-ish."
๐ ENTRUST
Tell your group about a promise someone broke that still shapes how you trust people today. How does knowing God literally cannot lie land next to that memory?
Gospel Appeal: Notice if broken promises from people have quietly leaked into how much you actually trust God's promises โ the same low-grade suspicion you've learned to apply to everyone else, applied to him too. No amount of past disappointment from other people is actually evidence against this specific promise-keeper; the pattern that trained your suspicion was built entirely out of humans, and none of that data applies to someone who isn't one. "I am the truth" wasn't Jesus claiming to be accurate about facts โ it was him claiming the same unbreakable self-consistency as the Father, and he's your great High Priest now, interceding for you with a word that has never once needed walking back. If you've never let his truthfulness override what people taught you to expect, today can be the day. And if you already trust him, name the specific promise you're leaning on hardest right now and say it's true, not true-ish.
Add Numbers 23:19 to your memorization deck and say it once out loud before you close this lesson.
Pray โ in your own words, or borrow this: "God who cannot lie, I've let broken promises from other people leak into how I trust You. Thank You that You're not like them. Amen."
Tomorrow: a God this reliable could still, in theory, owe you something โ be obligated to keep His word the way a debtor is obligated to a creditor. Tomorrow's passage says the opposite: He owes no one anything, which makes every promise He's kept pure gift.
