Day 8 · The Story of the Bible in 10 Days
The Spirit and the Church
Awaken
Jesus gives His followers an impossible-sounding assignment — carry this message to the literal ends of the earth — and then does something that sounds almost reckless: He leaves. But He doesn't leave them empty-handed.
Behold
Passage: Acts 1:8
Read the verse. What specifically will the disciples receive before they're sent out? How far does Jesus say their witness will eventually reach?
Internalize
Power before the mission. Before Jesus ascends to His cosmic throne, He gives His followers a mission: "You will be my witnesses... to the ends of the earth." But they're not sent to do it in their own strength. On the day of Pentecost, there's a sound like a rushing wind, and the Holy Spirit is poured out on the disciples.
The New Covenant arrives. This is the fulfillment of Ezekiel's and Jeremiah's promises from Day 5. The Spirit of God, who once dwelled only in the Holy of Holies in the Temple, now takes up residence inside believers. The Church is born — a radically new community marked by devotion to the apostles' teaching, deep fellowship, radical generosity, and joyful worship (Acts 2:42-47). Emboldened by the Spirit, ordinary men and women take the gospel of the risen Christ and turn the Roman Empire upside down. The same Spirit who did that through them is, if you belong to Christ, already resident in you — not a future upgrade you're waiting on.

Today's one small act: Ask God, specifically and out loud, for the Spirit's power to be a witness in one particular relationship today — a coworker, a neighbor, a family member you've been hesitant to talk to.
Entrust
Ask someone in your group: "Did you know the Holy Spirit filling believers is actually the fulfillment of a promise made hundreds of years earlier through the prophets?"
Gospel Appeal: Notice how often you try to run the Christian life — witness, obedience, showing up for people — on sheer resolve, the exact thing today's prayer already confesses. No amount of willpower substitutes for the Spirit's power; the disciples had three years with Jesus himself and still had to wait for power before they could do anything the mission required, and you need exactly what they needed. The Spirit poured out at Pentecost is the risen Christ's own gift, sent because he ascended to reign and intercede for you — which means the power for today isn't something you have to generate, only receive. If you've never actually received him — if you've been trying to run on your own strength because you've never really trusted there's another source — today can be the day you ask. And if you already carry his Spirit, let today be the day you stop trying to do in your own strength what he already offered to do in his.
Add Acts 1:8 to your memorization deck and say it once out loud before you close this lesson.
Pray — in your own words, or borrow this: "Holy Spirit, thank You for dwelling within me. Forgive me for trying to live the Christian life in my own strength. Fill me afresh today. Give me the boldness of the early disciples to share the good news, and give me a heart that loves Your Church deeply. Amen."
Tomorrow: the apostles start writing letters to explain, in detail, exactly what all of this means for how you actually live.
