Day 10 ยท Your First 30 Days
Getting a Verse's Context Right
๐ AWAKEN
You've probably already seen a Bible verse on a tea mug or a social media post, totally disconnected from everything around it. Today's a practical skill day: how to avoid doing that yourself.
๐ BEHOLD
Passage: 2 Timothy 2:15
- What word does Paul use for how Timothy should "handle" the word of truth?
- What's the goal Paul names โ approval from people, or something else?
Paul is writing to Timothy, a younger leader he's mentoring, giving practical instruction for how to teach Scripture responsibly to others.
๐ก INTERNALIZE
1. "Rightly handling" implies it's possible to handle it wrongly. Paul wouldn't give this instruction if careful handling weren't a real skill, distinct from careless handling. The most common way to mishandle a verse is pulling it out of its surrounding context โ treating one sentence as if it stands alone.
2. Three quick context questions for any verse. Before you build a conclusion on a single verse, ask: Who is speaking, and to whom? What comes right before and after it? Why was this written โ what problem or situation prompted it? You practiced this without naming it on Day 1 (John was defending who Jesus is to a specific group) and Day 5 (a poem about loving Scripture, not a promise of total clarity). The skill is the same skill; today just names it.
A useful habit: whenever a verse strikes you, read the whole paragraph around it before deciding what it means โ not just the sentence itself.

๐ฑ DO
<!-- reflectionQuestions render here -->
Today's one small act: Pick a verse you've heard quoted before (a mug, a meme, anything) and look up the paragraph around it. Does it mean what you assumed?
๐ ENTRUST
Add 2 Timothy 2:15 to your memorization deck.
Pray: "God, give me patience to actually understand your word instead of just skimming for a quick takeaway."
Tomorrow: You'll start actually memorizing verses on purpose, not just adding them to a deck as an afterthought โ and look at why it's worth the effort.
