Day 4 ยท Your First 30 Days
Talking to God: Prayer 101
๐ AWAKEN
If you've never prayed out loud in your life, or you only know the version that sounds stiff and formal, today should take some of the pressure off. Jesus' own disciples asked him "teach us to pray" โ and his answer wasn't a lecture. It was a short model prayer you can still use word for word.
๐ BEHOLD
Passage: Matthew 6:9-13
- Count the requests in this prayer. How many are there?
- Where does the prayer start โ with a request, or with something else first?
Jesus gives this right after telling his listeners not to pray like people trying to impress an audience or rack up "many words." This prayer is short on purpose.
๐ก INTERNALIZE
1. It starts with who God is, not what you want. "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name" โ the prayer opens with relationship (Father, echoing yesterday) and reverence, before a single request shows up. That order is the template, not just this one prayer's opening line.
2. It covers the whole of life in a few lines: provision, forgiveness, protection. "Daily bread" (practical needs), "forgive us... as we forgive" (relationships), "lead us not into temptation" (spiritual protection). You don't need elaborate language to pray about everything that matters โ you need honesty about what's actually going on in those three areas.
You can pray this prayer word-for-word today. You can also use it as a shape โ Father, provision, forgiveness, protection โ and fill in your own words. Both are real prayer, and neither one is the "wrong" way to talk to a Father who already wants to hear from you.

Today's one small act: Pray the Lord's Prayer slowly, out loud, once today โ even if you've never prayed out loud before.
๐ ENTRUST
Ask your check-in partner for a prayer request and use the Lord's Prayer framework for them.
Gospel Appeal: If part of what's kept you from praying out loud is the fear of doing it wrong โ the wrong words, not spiritual-sounding enough โ notice that Jesus gave a short, plain prayer on purpose, precisely so that fear wouldn't be a real risk. No amount of eloquence was ever the qualification; he warned against many words, not too few. Jesus himself taught this prayer, and he's your great High Priest right now, not grading your delivery โ he already told you exactly what he wants to hear. If prayer has felt like a performance you might fail, today can be the day you just say the words and let that be enough. And if you already pray freely, let today be the day you pray this exact prayer again, slower, and actually mean each line.
Add Matthew 6:9 to your memorization deck โ the opening line is a good anchor for the whole prayer.
Pray it now, in your own words if you'd rather: "Father, I want to actually know you, not just ask you for things. Teach me to pray the way Jesus taught his friends."
Tomorrow: You've talked to God. Tomorrow you start learning to let him talk back โ by opening your Bible for the first time with a plan instead of guessing where to start.
