Day 3 ยท Your First 30 Days

A Father, Not Just a Judge

๐ŸŒ… AWAKEN

If your picture of God is mostly a courtroom โ€” a judge tallying your record โ€” today's passage is going to feel almost too good to be safe. Read it slowly anyway.

๐Ÿ“– BEHOLD

Passage: Romans 8:15

  • What two spirits does Paul contrast in this verse?
  • What word does he say the Spirit prompts you to cry out?

"Abba" is Aramaic โ€” an intimate, familial word closer to "Dad" than the formal "Father." Paul is writing to a Roman church made up of both Jewish and Gentile believers, many of whom came from backgrounds where approaching God directly, informally, would have felt unthinkable.

๐Ÿ’ก INTERNALIZE

1. Fear and slavery go together; sonship and freedom go together. Paul names the alternative on purpose: a "spirit of slavery" that leads back "to fear." If your instinct with God is dread โ€” that you're one mistake from being disowned โ€” that's the old framework, not the new one from Day 2.

2. "Abba, Father" is something the Spirit prompts in you, not a technique you perform. This isn't a formula for how to pray (that's tomorrow). It's a description of what starts happening naturally once you actually believe Day 1 and Day 2 โ€” the fear response starts being replaced by something closer to a kid running to a parent, not a defendant approaching a bench.

This matters for the next 27 days specifically: every habit this study builds โ€” reading, praying, showing up to church โ€” will feel completely different depending on whether you're doing it to stay in God's good graces, or because you're already in the family and just getting to know the house.

Quick check

In Romans 8:15, what does Paul contrast with 'the Spirit of adoption'?

๐ŸŒฑ DO

Reflect

Today's one small act: Next time you catch yourself thinking of God as strictly a judge this week, pause and consciously say "Father" instead โ€” out loud if you can.

๐Ÿ™ ENTRUST

Text someone who models fatherly love well to thank them, or share how your view of God is shifting.

Gospel Appeal: Notice if you're still relating to God like a defendant hoping for a light sentence, even after Day 1 and Day 2 โ€” performing carefully so he stays pleased with you. No amount of careful behavior earns a welcome you were already given; performing for a Father who's already adopted you isn't extra credit, it's a misunderstanding of the relationship. Jesus is the one whose own Spirit prompts "Abba" in you, and he's your great High Priest right now โ€” not reviewing your last few days before deciding whether you're allowed to come close. If fear has been your default with God, today can be the day you actually run to him instead of bracing for him. And if you already know him as Father, let today be the day you stop bracing anyway, out of habit.

Add Romans 8:15 to your memorization deck.

Pray: "Abba, Father โ€” thank you that I don't have to perform my way into your approval. I'm already yours."

Tomorrow: If God really is Father, not just judge, what does actually talking to him look like? You'll walk through the prayer Jesus taught his own followers.
