Day 23 · Your First 30 Days
Finding a Church Home
Awaken
"Find a church" can feel like an overwhelming instruction with no clear criteria. Today gives you an actual template — what the very first Christian community looked like, in practice.
Behold
Passage: Acts 2:42
- List the four things this earliest church "devoted themselves to."
- Notice what's not on the list — no mention of building size, style of music, or production quality.
This describes the church in Jerusalem in its earliest days, right after Pentecost — the founding pattern for every Christian community since.
Internalize
1. Four simple marks: teaching, fellowship, communion, prayer. "The apostles' teaching" (sound Bible teaching, not entertainment), "fellowship" (real relationship, not just attendance), "the breaking of bread" (communion, which you'll look at directly on Day 25), and "the prayers" (corporate, shared prayer). That's a short, usable checklist for evaluating any church you visit.
2. What's absent is instructive too. No mention of aesthetics, size, or production value. Those aren't necessarily wrong things to have, but they're not what the earliest church is described as being devoted to — worth keeping in mind so you're not searching for the wrong things, or ruling out a good church over surface-level preferences.
Practically this week: if you don't already have a church, look up two or three nearby (ask a friend, search online, or check with someone you told about this study back on Day 1) and plan to visit one.

Today's one small act: If you don't currently attend a church, identify one you could visit this month — even just picking a name and a date counts as today's step.
Entrust
Tell the person you've been checking in with this week whether you've found a church, or where you're stuck if you haven't.
Gospel Appeal: Notice if you're quietly shopping for a church the way you'd shop for entertainment — production value, music style, the building itself — rather than the four simple, unglamorous marks today's passage actually names. No amount of impressive production delivers teaching, fellowship, communion, and prayer if those four things aren't genuinely present underneath it. Jesus is your great High Priest right now, and he's not more present in an impressive building than a plain one — he's found wherever his people are actually devoted to those four things, whatever the building looks like. If you've been ruling out good churches over surface preferences, today can be the day you actually check for the substance instead. And if you've already found a church, notice which of the four marks it does best, and thank God for it specifically.
Add Acts 2:42 to your memorization deck.
Pray: "God, lead me to a community where teaching, real relationship, communion, and prayer actually happen — and give me courage to show up. In Jesus' name, amen."
Tomorrow: Once you're part of a church, one of the first public steps many take is baptism. You'll look at what it actually means.
